AGAINST THE STREAM Tomorrow June 21, 2009 at 11 AM
Tomorrow at 11 am I will be speaking at Against The Stream (aka Dharam Punx, aka Noah Levine's place). Here is the into about the place from their website:
Against The Stream Buddhist Meditation Society is located in a historic building in East Hollywood, one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the city. It is on the corner of Melrose and Berendo, near LA City College and Vermont Avenue where you can find many small restaurants, bakeries and shops.

I'll probably say mean stuff about Amma...
See you there!

You won't say mean stuff about ANYBODY or ANYTHING, Ven.
You are over that.

How can we find the place without a MAP???
Good luck.
Now, now Brad. The whole Amma scene may be goofy, but a hug never hurt anybody.
This blog-post is page-ranked #1 on Google for "Amma Against the Stream."
Which doesn't exactly help one define "Amma."
Personally I think Brad would really benefit from a great big Amma love-hug.
Amma
Amma is a common name for many female gurus from India. The most famous is the "hugging saint" linked to above. I assume Brad is kidding and that he also does not cut cats in half during his talks.
Jinzhang, Justin:
なるほど... (I see.)
Against the Stream hugging...
I'd say more but it's not necessary.
Huh, found a link on the Wikipedia page showing where J Mascis recorded a CD of devotional music dedicated to Amma. Ya learn something new every day! I bet that's an interesting CD.
I can see why Brad might sincerely be critical of the Amma cult, but I say, of all the woo-woo stuff people can fall for, that are sidetracks from the 'real deal' when it comes to truth and reality, enjoying hugs and contributing to world peace is hardly the worst example.
this comment goes to eleven.
I bet more people would show up for
zazen at Hill Street Center if y'all
offered "Free Hugs" from Suicide Girls,
or maybe even better, "Free Dry-Humping".
btw, my *zazen* goes to eleven...
I wrap cucumbers in tinfoil and situate them in a way that makes my zazen seem bigger.

Why not try stuffing a zafu down the front of your trousers? That always makes an impression.
So, to someone who attended Brad's talk: did he hug Amma or did he slug her?
Hi Jinzang,
Neither. He started by saying what he thought was cool about her (she tells jokes, as does her warm up act! plus humanitarian and charity work, both obviously very cool), then described the whole scene, which is pretty weird. He offered his critique and why he thought it was important. It was a good talk and was recorded via video, so some of it might pop up on the internet one day.
I assumed the question was figurative. Literally, he hugged her.
Hi everyone:
Brad has magic Buddha powers. I hardly ever get unexpected email, but within days of his mentioning my email address I've won seven contests and lotteries and been invited to house-sit in London by some guy I've never heard of. My question is, did Amma slug Brad?
Rob
Damn, Rob! You should slug Brad!
That's why I don't sit at Hill Street.
I'm afraid Brad will either call me an
asswipe on his blog or, even worse,
post my email address on it.
July 2011. Amma Amritanandamayi's spin doctors tried to distance Amma from a sex scandal involving Rishi Taavi Kassila, an Amma organizer who lives and tours with Amma.

Thanks so much for this post, pretty helpful data.
